SMC Softball: Davison helps Belles sweep Goshen

Saint Mary's (14-8) was in total command of Thursday's doubleheader against Goshen College, hammering the Leafs 8-0 and 9-0. Both games ended in five innings due to the slaughter rule.

Belles sophomore pitcher Calli Davison (3.57 ERA) pitched a two-hit shutout in the first game against the Leafs. Sophomore catcher Ashley Fusaro led the Belles' offense, going four-for-six in the two games, hitting a double and three singles. Fusaro also stole a base in the first game, marking the first time in her career that she has swiped a bag. Senior third baseman Laura Heline hit two singles and a home run in the routs.

In the second game of the sweep, sophomore pitcher Kristin Amram (1.22 ERA) pitched a one-hitter in the Belles' 9-0 blanking of the Leafs. Davison, playing center field, hit her first home run of the season.

Junior captain McKenna Corrigan believes the sweep of Goshen will help the team in its next conference game Saturday.

"The games gave us some confidence behind our backs again," she said. "We were able to hit our base runners in."

With several rescheduled games adding to an already-heavy slate of games, the Belles may feel pressure and fatigue. But their victory over Goshen shows the team is still fired up and focused for the rest of the season.

"It's nice to be able to go game-to-game and learn from each game," Fusaro said. "We can keep moving forward."

The Belles will face MIAA opponent Olivet Saturday at 1 p.m. at Gainey Field.
