Fans must 'uplift' team for Navy game

If you haven't noticed by now, the Notre Dame football team has made the wrong kind of history this season by starting 0-5 and currently holding a 1-7 record. Although this experience is heartbreaking for both fans and players, this does not preclude the student body and fan base from its duties during home football games.

There has been a marked decline in the loudness and the charisma shown by the student body and fans. This was apparent during the match-up against USC. It is only natural to feel beaten up and weary after consistently losing, but we must not remain complacent. It is our job, as students and as fans, to uplift our team in those trying moments of a game, instead of letting the momentum shift in the opposition's favor - allowing the opponent's band to be heard from afar. Furthermore, to have left the game early prior to the singing of the Alma Mater is much like turning your back on your fellow classmates, and denouncing what we are supposed to stand for. This will not suffice, and must be stopped, for Notre Dame faces a great challenge this Saturday.

The Naval Academy will be in town to play the Irish, and it will not be as easy as in previous years. Although they are 4-4, Navy has posted high scores against opponents such as Pittsburgh and Duke. Coming off a 59-52 loss against Delaware, Navy is ranked 35th in points scored according to ESPN.com. Navy will certainly be ready to battle the Irish come Saturday. In such a game there will be mistakes made, and this should not dissuade the Notre Dame student body and fan base. We need to come out in strong support of our team, standing shoulder to shoulder, from beginning to end. Otherwise, the consequence just might be another loss of momentum for our football team to overcome. Go Irish, beat Navy!
