ND Women's Crew: Rowers begin season at Head of the Rock

Notre Dame will open its season Sunday in Rockford, Ill. with the Head of the Rock Regatta, which traditionally opens the Irish schedule.More than 1,700 rowers of all ages will compete in one or more of 42 events on a 2.75-mile course on the Rock River.Three Irish boats will compete with Marquette, North Park, St. Cloud State, St. Louis and Wisconsin in Novice Eight, while six more boats will compete in Open Eight against Macalester, Marquette, Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa, St. Thomas and Wisconsin.Last season, the Head of the Rock was cancelled because of inclement weather. In 2005, the Irish took third in the open competition and sixth in the novice regatta. The Irish finished ninth last season in the NCAA Championships. After this weekend, Notre Dame takes nearly a month off before renewing their quest to get back to the NCAAs. On Nov. 4, the Irish travel to Blue Island, Ill., for the Cal Sag Regatta, and a week later they host Northwestern in a dual meet on the Saint Joseph River. After the spring thaw, Notre Dame will race several more times, including at the NCAAs - but those regattas do not have a scheduled date set.
