With her refusal to accept this year’s Laetare Medal, Mary Ann Glendon displayed by that action what it means to be an outstanding Catholic, which is the purpose of the award. Now Father Jenkins is looking at his bench for a second or third stringer to fill the vacancy. Either he will cheapen the award that Glendon has ennobled or he will be hard put to find someone willing to accept the award … unless he calls on Roland Burris, of course.
To be chastised is to learn a lesson and sometimes that is the essence of education. Leave it vacant. There is no way to improve on the original choice.
