| Friday, August 28, 2009

A fire in a utility tunnel near LaFortune Student Center has been extinguished, according to the University’s emergency Web site.

University spokesman Dennis Brown said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A Notre Dame employee was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation but has since been released.

Several buildings and dorms in the area were evacuated, and emergency personnel are asking people to stay away from the area.

Faculty, staff and students who have been evacuated are welcome at North Dining Hall, according to the e-mail sent to students Friday morning.

The incident has interrupted Internet, telephone and Cable service in 36 buildings.

Classes remain in session.
