SMC Cross Country: Belles begin final season competition

Observer Staff Report | Thursday, October 27, 2011

Saint Mary’s will participate this Saturday in the MIAA Championship on the campus of Alma College in Alma, Mich.

The MIAA Championships represent the last event of the regular season before NCAA competition begins Nov. 12.

This final competition will make up two-thirds of the team scores that will be used to crown the conference champion. The other one-third of the team score was determined at the MIAA Jamboree Sept. 24 where the Belles finished seventh.

The Belles will face tough competition from six-time defending champion Calvin, as well as tough Hope and Albion squads.

The Belles will look for strong performances from their two top runners — senior Joanee Almond and junior Julia Kenney. Almond and Kenney accounted for the Belles’ top two times at the MIAA Jamboree.

Adrian, Alma, Kalamazoo, Olivet and Trine will also compete in the event.

The MIAA Championships will off in Alma, Mich., on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
