Former five-star recruit Kiel intends to transfer from Irish

Irish sophomore quarterback Gunner Kiel will transfer from Notre Dame, sources close to the football program confirmed with The Observer on Thursday evening.

Kiel cleaned out his locker, one source said.

Irish Sports Daily first published the report, saying that Kiel intended to transfer nearly 14 months after enrolling early in January 2012.

Kiel did not play during the 2012 season. He served as a scout team quarterback and was expected to return alongside junior Everett Golson and seniors Tommy Rees and Andrew Hendrix.

Freshman quarterback Malik Zaire enrolled early and will join the remaining quarterbacks for spring practice.

Kiel, who attended Columbus High School in Columbus, Ind., was a five-star recruit according to multiple scouting services. He initially committed to Indiana before decommitting. Kiel then committed to LSU on Dec. 27, 2011, before signing with Notre Dame in January 2012.
