SMC student stabbed in South Bend

A Saint Mary’s student was stabbed at approximately 10 a.m. today while serving as part of a longstanding community nursing placement at Broadway Christian Church in the 1400 block of Carroll Street, according to a WNDU report.

The report states witnesses saw 43-year-old Dwayne Newsom attack the student, who was volunteering at the church. Officers tended to her before medics arrived, and she is in stable condition, though the injury was potentially life-threatening, according to the report.

Other responding officers captured Newsom, the report states. Members of the College community received an email alerting them to this incidence.

“Many of our students serve at a variety of community organizations planned to meet health needs for individuals and the community as aligned with the mission of the College," vice president for student affairs Karen Johnson said in the email. “The safety of our students is our highest priority. If you have questions and concerns, please reach out to me.”

Johnson said in the email members of the College community are welcome to gather in Carroll Auditorium on Wednesday at 4 p.m. to “reflect, share and discuss this incident.”
