Remember how lucky we are

There will be an empty chair in May. One of our family will not be present on graduation day. Caitlin Brann, a senior at Notre Dame, was killed in a car accident Friday. She was 22. I did not know Caitlin. I cannot imagine what the people who loved her are going through and my deepest condolences are with them, but I feel the loss of a member of our community. Her death is a heartbreaking reminder of how fragile and precious life is. After I learned the news I asked family and friends how to honor someone that has died. Celebrate the good choices she made, learn from her mistakes and don't waste a single day of our own lives. Mourn Caitlin's death and then celebrate her life. We are all very lucky to be here on earth, to be a part of the Notre Dame family, to be able to wake up every morning. Caitlin does not get another chance to live, but we do. We must live every day to the fullest. It can be gone in an instant. Let Caitlin's death not be in vain. At the very least, let it remind us to live.
