Joining his twin brother George in the 2011 recruiting class for the Irish, Josh Atkinson played on both sides of the ball in high school, but is listed by the Notre Dame coaching staff as a defensive back. He recorded 20 tackles and broke up 11 passes on defense during his senior year. Aided by his size and physicality, Atkinson sheds blocks well and can knock receivers off their routes.
Though he does not have the pure speed of his brother, Atkinson has good recovery speed, an important asset for a defensive back. He and George both competed for Team USA in the Team USA vs. The World all-star game Wednesday. Atkinson has the size to play safety at the college level, or could see early playing time as a nickel back.
