ND sophomore dies

Observer Staff Report | Friday, April 1, 2011

University President Fr. John Jenkins asked the Notre Dame community in a press release today to keep sophomore Sean Valero and his family in their prayers. Valero, a resident of Keenan Hall, died this week.

“On behalf of the Notre Dame community, my deepest condolences go out to Sean’s family and friends,” Jenkins said. “My prayers are with them during this difficult time.”

A Mass will be celebrated today at 5 p.m. in the Keenan Hall Chapel for the Keenan community and Sean’s friends. A University-wide memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later date.

Valero’s body was found late Thursday night in the area near campus lakes, the release stated. The St. Joseph County coroner’s office ruled Valero’s death a suicide.

Valero was a native of Niskayuna, N.Y. The University Counseling Center is offering grief counseling.
