Saint Mary’s cancels study abroad for spring 2021
Observer Staff Report | Thursday, October 8, 2020
Saint Mary’s has canceled all study abroad programs for spring 2021 due to rising cases of COVID-19 across the world, provost Titi Ufomata announced in an email Wednesday.
“Our policy stipulates that students cannot participate in study abroad programs in countries with high threat levels, typically Level 3 and above,“ she said. “Currently, the CDC’s risk assessment for our destination countries is Level 3 (COVID-19 Risk is High).”
The email acknowledged that it was necessary to make the call sooner rather than later. Students who were intending on studying abroad this spring should expect an update on the Global Education website next week.
The administration will make a decision regarding summer 2021 programs in the spring, contingent upon the global climate.
“We relate to the disappointment that this cancellation brings and sympathize with students who might not have another opportunity to study abroad before they graduate,“ Ufomata said.
