Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s to offer multiple Ash Wednesday services

| Tuesday, February 16, 2021

To begin the 2021 Lenten season during the pandemic, Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s campus ministries are offering a number of Ash Wednesday Masses and services, both in-person and online.

In regards to ash distribution, Notre Dame Campus Ministry’s website says, “In an effort to distribute ashes in a safe and responsible manner during the coronavirus pandemic, the Holy See has asked that ashes be sprinkled on the crown of the head, rather than signed on the forehead.”

This method is an ancient tradition still common in many countries, the website says.

Mass in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart will be offered at 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., and Spanish Mass will be offered at 8 p.m. The Basilica will livestream Mass at noon.

Additional Ash Wednesday Masses will be offered in 101 DeBartolo Hall at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., in the Stepan Center at 8:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. and in Decio Theatre in the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Confessions will be offered from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Sacred Heart Crypt.

Saint Mary’s will offer celebration of the word of God and the distribution of ashes at 12:15 p.m. and 5 p.m. in the Holy Spirit Chapel in Le Mans Hall. Celebrations of the Eucharist with the distribution of ashes will be offered at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the Holy Spirit Chapel.

A live stream of the Saint Mary’s 5 p.m. service and the 7 p.m. Mass will be available on YouTube.
