Lou Somogyi, ND football reporter and Observer alum, dies at 58

Lou Somogyi, longtime Notre Dame football beat reporter and senior editor for Blue & Gold Illustrated, died Saturday morning, the news site announced Sunday. He was 58.

Blue & Gold said Somogyi had posted to its site shortly before 9 a.m. Saturday and then went out to play tennis before suffering an apparent heart attack.

Somogyi was a Notre Dame ’84 alumnus and wrote for The Observer from 1980-1983. While covering the football team was his main endeavor at the paper, Somogyi also covered gymnastics, basketball and baseball, among other sports. He also wrote a column entitled “Club Corner” where he covered club sports on campus.

In their tribute, Blue & Gold publisher Stu Coman said Somogyi’s knowledge of Notre Dame sports was “unmatched” and his work ethic was “extraordinary.”

“Also a special friend, Lou was unassuming, self-deprecating, kind and thoughtful — one of the nicest individuals I [have] ever known,” Coman wrote. “Like most that knew him, I loved and respected Lou.”
