Yared Nuguse pulls out of Olympics due to injury

Notre Dame graduate student Yared Nuguse — who was supposed to be in heat 3 of the 1500m race at the Tokyo Olympics — pulled out of the competition Monday due to a strained quadriceps.

Nuguse qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games this year by hitting a personal best of 3:34.68 in the 1500m, which is also the NCAA record, and then placing third at the Olympic Trials.

According to the IndyStar, Notre Dame cross country and track and field coach Matt Sparks said this is Nuguse’s first-ever injury and has prohibited him from doing strides.

On their Twitter account, the Irish track and field team wished Nuguse well and said they hoped to see him back for the fall season of cross country and for track meets throughout the coming year.
