Readers of The Observer owe you a great deal of thanks for publishing Liam Finn’s response
to the neighbor on East Washington. Mr. Finn’s missive illustrated said neighbor’s point better than anyone could have expected.
It is disappointing that an alum of “greatest University [sic] in the world” would sneer at his erstwhile neighbors in such an immature manner. And it is beneath an alum of Our Lady’s university to tell anyone “You live in South Bend because of Notre Dame.” I suspect the neighbor lives in South Bend because it’s his home. Finally, if we are talking tone-deaf, let us agree that student residents of this great city have little standing to condescend to those who have been here for decades.
I don’t know the guy who was quoted all over town and maybe he’s not everyone’s favorite neighbor. But his attitude is beside the point. Mr. Finn’s letter achieves the opposite of its purpose and one hopes alums would favor better town and gown relationships over “if you don’t like it, move.”
Sincerely yours in Notre Dame,
