With one minute left in the third quarter, junior guard Sonia Citron left the game with a lower-body injury. Citron was helped off of the court by members of the medical staff. She was able to walk and put weight on both of her feet.
When she got hurt, Citron was still playing with the Irish up by more than 30 points. She scored 23 points prior to her early exit. In Notre Dame’s blowout win against NJIT, head coach Niele Ivey utilized similar game-management tactics. Citron played 34 minutes, while star freshman guard Hannah Hidalgo played 36. Ivey is known as an intense coach who plays her starters deep into games, regardless of the score.
In the postgame press conference, Ivey expressed mixed emotions about the turn of events.
“It was bittersweet just because Sonia went down,” Ivey said. “I talked to them about trying to finish the game and play for her.”
