Students, faculty and staff light candles at the Grotto in honor of management professor Mike Montalbano.

Management professor Mike Montalbano died unexpectedly Tuesday. Montalbano taught at the University since 2015, according to an online directory.

Mendoza College of Business dean Martijn Cremers announced the news in an email to business students Wednesday afternoon.

The College hosted a walk to the Grotto and a prayer service which faculty chaplain Fr. Frank Murphy presided over Wednesday evening for students, faculty and staff.

“We believe that all the ties of friendship and affections which knit us as one throughout our lives do not unravel with death,” Murphy said. “Confident that God always remembers the good we have done and forgives our sins, let us pray asking God to gather Mike to Himself.”

Montalbano is survived by his wife Sue, his children and grandchildren. One of Montalbano’s sons, Thomas, said at the service his father loved being a teacher of Notre Dame’s students.

Montalbano’s funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart Monday.
