It is not even the past.” -William Faulkner* We, the Native American Student Association of Notre Dame, ask that the University solidify its commitment to inclusion and its indigenous population by declaring Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, “Indigenous Peoples’ Day.” We feel that our experiences have been ignored by the University in spite of its self-proclaimed commitment to native populations during “The Trail.” The declaration of Indigenous Peoples’ Day would make Notre Dame the fifth major academic institution to do so and denote a commitment to continuing the conversation. We invite all of campus, especially those who work in the Main Building under the Dome, to join us in peaceful protest in front of the Columbus murals on Monday, Oct. 9, from 4:30-5:30 p.m. We are excited to open discussions on Native American representation at Notre Dame.*This Faulkner quote was chosen by the University to justify the Columbus Murals in the Dome. We reject their interpretation and take it back for ourselves.
