Irish head coach Brian Kelly has promoted Tom Rees, former Notre Dame quarterback and quarterbacks coach since 2017, to offensive coordinator.
The news comes after Rees called the offensive plays for Notre Dame’s matchup against Iowa State in the 2019 Camping World Bowl, a game the Irish won handily. Rees stepped in as play caller for that contest after former offensive coordinator Chip Long parted ways with the program.
In Rees’ time as quarterbacks coach, senior quarterback Ian Book finished eighth in the nation in completion percentage with 68.2% of pass attempts completed in his junior season. Book also holds the best career completion percentage at 63.5%.
Also under Rees’ direction, former Irish quarterback Brandon Wimbush broke the program’s record for rushing yards in a single game by a quarterback, with 207 yards in a 2017 win over Boston College.
On top of news of Rees’ promotion, Kelly also announced that Lance Taylor, who served as the running backs coach this season, has been promoted to the running game coordinator. Notre Dame’s running backs averaged their fourth highest yards per carry in the last 25 years, with 4.9 yards per carry under Taylor this season.
