Notre Dame announced in a press release Friday that first-year and transfer students will not be required to submit standardized test scores during the 2020-2021 application period. The change is part of a one-year pilot program for admissions that the University has been considering for years, according to associate vice president of enrollment Don Bishop.
“Notre Dame has always been committed to a holistic evaluation process. Over the past 10 years, we have been less reliant on a student’s test score in our final assessment,” Bishop said in the release.
Prospective students in the class of 2025 will have the option to include test scores, but will not be at a disadvantage if they choose not to submit them.
“This empowers students to decide what they consider to be the strongest application put forward to Notre Dame that may or may not include a standardized test score,” the release said.
The release noted that, “student’s academic performance in high school and a review of the rigor of the curriculum pursued, along with written essays, letters of recommendation and the student’s résumé of extracurricular activities” will still be part of the evaluation process.
In the pilot year, international students will still be required to show English proficiency through taking the TOEFL, IELTS, DET or PTE Academic, the release said.
In addition, the University will continue to follow the guidance and regulations established by the NCAA regarding the application process for student-athletes.
