Jenkins releases statement in response to violent insurrection on Capitol Hill

University President Fr. John Jenkins responded to Wednesday’s violent mass gathering on Capitol Hill where an angry mob of people objecting election results — fueled by accusations of election fraud from many Republicans, namely President Donald Trump — breached the Capitol Building.

One person was shot and killed during the riots — a Southern California native named Ashli Babbitt.

Congress planned to certify election results that would confirm Joe Biden as president-elect before protestors entered the building.

“Today’s assault on Congress was unworthy of our democracy,” Jenkins said in a Wednesday statement. “We pray for the nation and call on everyone, regardless of political affiliation, to condemn unequivocally the disruption of institutions designed to serve the common good.”
