St. Joseph County renews mask order

St. Joseph County health officer Robert Einterz renewed the county mask order Monday the South Bend Tribune reported. The decision came after Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb announced last week the statewide mask mandate would become a mask advisory April 6.

The county’s mask order was originally set to expire Wednesday but will now expire May 27. Einterz said the order will not be renewed after May 27.

Einterz said the order was renewed due to a recent increase in COVID-19 cases in the county.

The mask order was met with strong opposition from Republican county leadership. County commissioners president Andy Kostielney and commissioner Derek Dieter said a mask advisory, rather than a mandate, would set in place adequate health protocols and questioned the health department’s ability to enforce the mask order.
