A man drowned after jumping into St. Joseph’s Lake at Notre Dame’s campus Friday night, according to a Sunday press release from the University.
While the University and the police did not initially specify the man’s identity, the St. Joseph County Coroner’s Office later identified the man as Emil Lebron Williams, a 29-year-old South Bend resident.
Coroners also ruled Williams’ death an accidental drowning, the South Bend Tribune reported Tuesday.
On Friday night at 7:01 p.m., the Notre Dame Police Department (NDPD) reportedly received a 911 call about a man who “had climbed a fence and jumped off a pier at what is a closed beach on the east side of the lake.”
According to the release, officers arrived in two minutes but could not locate Williams under the “murky water.” Five minutes later, the Notre Dame Fire Department reportedly arrived with a boat, but were also unable to find him.
A short time later, divers from the South Bend Fire Department reportedly arrived and located Williams at the bottom of the lake. After performing CPR on the beach, emergency personnel transported him to Memorial Hospital of South Bend, according to the press release. Williams was pronounced dead at the hospital around 9 p.m. Friday night.
Although an autopsy was not performed, officials are awaiting the results of standard toxicology tests, according to St. Joseph County’s deputy coroner Dr. Paul Guentert. Results are typically expected within four weeks.
