Notre Dame will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, through a series of events on Saturday, the University announced in a press release Tuesday. The commemorative events will begin with a prayer service held on South Quad on Saturday morning.
The prayer service — organized by student government and Campus Ministry — will begin Saturday at 8:46 a.m, the time the first plane hit One World Trade Center in New York City. Fr. Edward “Monk” Malloy will preside over the service, as he presided over the Mass in the same location 20 years earlier.
University President Fr. John Jenkins and Malloy will present the national colors immediately before the Notre Dame-Toledo football game Saturday afternoon. The commemoration will begin at 2:20 p.m. in Notre Dame Stadium and feature reflections from Malloy and a prayer by Jenkins.
At halftime, the Notre Dame and Toledo marching bands will join together to play “Amazing Grace,” akin to the joint performance from the Notre Dame and Michigan State bands in the first football game following the attacks.
