Saint Mary’s class council seeks to promote unity through events, parents weekend and senior week. This year — with COVID-19 restrictions lessened — Class Council hopes to have a more traditional year, especially for the class of 2022.
Senior Class Council
Senior Class Council representative Emma Berges noted that even though she did take up her role later into the semester, she has been able to finalize programming and fundraising plans for the spring semester that she is excited to share.
“So I came in [around] October so I kind of started late as the senior class council representative,” she said. “But I feel like this semester has been really focused on planning more than like actually anything because we have a lot of big stuff coming up second semester.”
Berges said programing was recently finalized and they are excited to move forward with fundraising in the spring — through sweatshirt sales similar to last year’s “lucky me I go to SMC” — and the confirmation for parents weekend.
“We finally got Parents Weekend approved and so all the details for that are like beginning to come together,” Berges said.
This year, seniors will have combined parents weekend since they were not able to host junior moms last year, and the junior class host a traditional junior moms weekend. Parents weekend will look a little different for the class of 2022, with a combined parents weekend and junior moms.
Senior class council has a lot of programming in the works for when students return in the spring. They are excited to start hosting events for the graduating class, celebrating their final moments at Saint Mary’s.
"We really want to like make sure we have a good senior week for this year, and we think the things that we’re planning will be really [fun],” Berges said. “We're also planning a lot of like [collaborations] with some of the other big boards.”
Junior Class Council
Junior Class Council representatives Ariel Munoz and Callie McLeod discussed having a late start to planning, fundraising and excitement for the class of 2023 as they near senior year.
“So what we’ve been doing this entire semester, really since we’ve gotten here, is planning for Parents Weekend,” Munoz said. “Because this year, we're going to combine junior moms and senior dads”
Due to the pandemic, this year’s parent weekend will still be different from past years. Seniors will be able to bring a parent, family member or loved ones.
“So it’s going to be like so many people on campus for that one weekend,” Munoz said. “But that’s what we’ve been planning for and getting the details about [this semester].”
Munoz and McLeod put a big emphasis on budget — having served as class representatives last year — coming into the position this year with no funding has proven difficult for hosting events and programing what students want to see.
Munoz express their concern for programming this upcoming semester, having funds and trying to find ways of hosting events they usually would and events students want. In light of budget cuts and lack of funding, Munoz and McLeod are strongly pushing fundraising and help from peers themselves.
Class of 2023 is hoping to host two events in the spring in addition to a fundraiser. McLeod notes that another big focus this semester is finding a way to gauge more of what juniors want to see from Class Council and having a town hall or creating a space where they can just hear from students directly.
Finally, Munoz and McLeod discussed the auction that both classes of 2022 and 2023 are holding as separate events for their respective classes. The auction includes three raffle baskets that students can raffle to win that consistent of prizes from the school and student body.
Traditionally, the class representatives reach out to local businesses and companies to support the raffle and provide items to include in the baskets. This year, Munoz and McLeod are turning their focus towards the class of 2022, asking any student with family, friends or anyone they know who would like to support and donate items for the auction.
“We’re just like looking for anybody who can like offer anything to the table,” Munoz said. “They had like these really cool things last year, but of course it’s when they had a looser budget. So we are just trying to reach out to anyone we can and let students who may have family or friends we can connect to aware.”
Sophomore Class Council
The Sophomore Class Council representatives are Aubreigh Morgan and Caroline Kiefer. Neither Morgan nor Kiefer responded to requests for further information and none was readily available when The Observer searched for it.
First-year Class Council
In an email, first-year Class Council representative Liliana Lomeli noted that due to being elected recently and just now coming into these roles, the council have not had a chance to host any events. However, the council has programming planned in the spring, in addition to a tote bag fundraiser.
“Since we first-year representatives are new to Class Council we have not been able to do any programming so far in the year,” she said. “However, we do have a tote bag sale coming up after break.”
In addition, first-year Class Council has been working alongside the senior and junior representatives to program parents weekend events.
Lomeli expresses her excitement upon taking up this new role and is looking forward to the spring semester.
“Taking the role as a first-year representative has been fun so far," Lomeli said. “I enjoy planning events and creating fun, enjoyable atmospheres and I can do that in the position I am in.”
With large budget cuts and uncertainties on planning due to COVID, Class Counsel and the class representatives have worked hard to create a senior week and events that students want to see. Further, they are trying to gain some sense of normality by planning events for the spring models ad closely ad possible to the traditional senior week events. With a late start and a limited budget no class has been able to host an event this semester, however, they have finalized some fun events and fundraisers that they look forward to sharing with students soon.
