The Irish women’s tennis team dropped both of their matches this weekend on their trip out to tobacco road, losing to Duke and North Carolina by scores of 5-2 and 7-0, respectively.
In Friday’s matchup against eleventh-ranked Duke, senior Page Freeman was very competitive in first singles against the NCAA’s second-ranked singles player, Chloe Beck. Despite losing the opening set 0-6, Freeman battled back to win the second set 6-4. The final set was competitive but Freeman ultimately fell 4-6.
The Irish got a victory in second singles with junior Julia Andreach beating Cameron Morra by a a score of 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
The Irish would fall in third and fourth singles, however. Junior Yashna Yellayi lost to Emma Jackson in straight sets by a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. Sophomore Carrie Beckman won the first set against Georgia Drummy, but eventually lost in three sets by a score of 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
The Irish got their second victory of the day in fifth singles with freshman Bojana Pozder beating Ellie Coleman in a highly competitive match by a score of 7-5, 7-5.
The Blue Devils won sixth singles, though, with Brianna Shvets beating freshman Akari Matsuno in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
The Blue Devils also dominated in doubles and took the doubles point to win the match overall by a score of 5-2.
In Chapel Hill, the Irish struggled against first-ranked North Carolina, losing the match by a score of 7-0.
In first singles, top-ranked singles player Fiona Crawley beat Freeman in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. Reese Brantmeier won second singles in straight sets as well, beating Andreach 6-4, 6-3.
In third singles, seventh-ranked singles player Carson Tanguilig defeated Yellayi in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. And in fourth singles, Elizabeth Scotty made quick work of Beckman, winning by a dominating score of 6-1, 6-0.
In fifth singles, Pozder showed some fight for the Irish and brought the match to three sets, but ultimately she lost to Abbey Forbes by a score of 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-4). In sixth singles, the Tar Heels dominated again with Anika Yarlagadda defeating Matsuno, 6-3, 6-4.
The Tar Heels dominated in doubles as well, giving up only four games across all three matches.
