Saint Mary's soccer falls short in opening match

Belles fall 0-1 to Seabeggars in season opener

The 2024 soccer season began for the Belle’s this past Friday. The team fell short with a 0-1 loss against the Providence Christian Seabeggars. 

Both teams fought strongly throughout the first half, but at the 22 minute mark, the Seabeggars were able to score the lone goal of the game during the first half. 

Saint Mary’s did not give up and let them the game get away, finishing strong but falling short in the 0-1 loss. The Belles overpowered the Seabeggars 14-6 in shots, and also totaled 8 eight shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Riley Lindsey led the team on the pitch saving two of the three Providence Christian shots. Sophomore midfielder Margaret Slove led on offense for the Belles with five shots and four shots-on-goal during the game. Grace Barresi and Mary Kaczynski, two senior starters in the Belles midfield, put up three shots. Barresi added two shots on-goal. 

As a team over all, the Belles totaled fourteen shots, eight of which on goal, two saves, seven fouls, two corner kicks and five offsides. On the other end of the field, the Seabeggars totaled six shots, four of which on goal, eight saves, eleven fouls, three corner kicks and three offsides.

The Belles now prepare to face Bluffton University with kickoff set at 4 p.m. on September 4th.
