Saints take a tie and a loss against St. Francis

Holy Cross men make a late comeback to earn a draw on the road

Both Holy Cross soccer teams were in action this week playing against the St. Francis (Illinois) Fighting Saints. The Saints’ men’s soccer team tied 3-3 while the women’s team had a close, 2-1 loss against the Fighting Saints of St. Francis. 

Women’s game

The Fighting Saints took an early lead in the first half, scoring their first goal at the 6:25 mark with the help of Alexis Marroquin and an assist from Mia Ocana. 

St. Francis did not slow down heading into the second half with their second goal of the game made by Ariadne Gonzalez with the help of an assist from Litzy Flores at the 66:31 mark. The Saints, however, did not let that rattle them, creating their own goal made by junior forward Mia Garatoni at the 86:26 mark with an assist from sophomore midfielder Erika Perez, bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of St. Francis. 

While the Saints were unable to make a comeback, Holy Cross outshot St. Francis 18-17. Sophomore forward Miriam Iturriga-Sanchez led on the field having a total of five shot attempts, and freshman center midfielder Cameron Fallacara followed with two shots on goal.

Now 3-6 overall, the Saints now prepare to face off against the Indiana Northwest RedHawks on Oct. 1 with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m.

Men’s game

The Holy Cross men’s soccer team finished out its night tying 3-3 with the Fighting Saints. 

The first half did not go in favor of the Saints, as they fell behind 1-0 after a goal at the 8:01 mark from the Saints’ Dominik Barwiolek with the help of an assist from Nathan Sharp. 

Holy Cross kept fighting going into the second half, but the start of the half did not go the Saints’ way. Barwiolek made his second goal of the game for the Fighting Saints at the 48:02 mark with an assist from Anthony Derka making the score now 2-0. That being said, the Saints pushed back and thanks to a goal from senior forward Issac Filippo and an assist from senior midfielder Isa Sayeed that pushed the score to 2-1. After being awarded a penalty kick, Filippo made his second goal of the night to tie the score 2-2. At the 71:17 time mark, freshman center midfielder Alexis Moro scored his first goal of the night with an assist from Nathan Sanchez, and the Saints now were pulling ahead at 3-2. In the final minutes of the game, St. Francis was awarded a penalty kick, and the goal was made by Santos Contreras to tie the score at 3-3. 

Now 3-5-2 on the season, the Saints prepare to face off against Indiana Northwest on Oct. 2 starting at 4:30 p.m.
