Belles fall to Grace in 4-3 match

Despite strong doubles play, Saint Mary’s fell short in singles

In the annual Morgan's Message game, the Saint Mary’s tennis team took a close, 4-3 loss against the Grace College Lancers on Monday.

Doubles

The doubles matches favored the Belles, as they took two wins and a loss.

The No. 1 match featured senior Alayna Campbell and her partner junior Emma Kealy facing off against Jimena Ramirez and Sofia Beltran from Grace. Campbell and Kealy ended up on top, taking the 6-3 win. 

Saint Mary's No. 2 doubles team of freshman Shannon Dudy and sophomore Sophia Pischalko faced off against Lydia Ruegsegger and Geraldine Salinas but suffered a 6-2 loss.

In the No. 3 match, sophomore Anna Gardner and junior Evelyn Demblans-Dechans dominated the Lancers’ Molli Runestad and Natalie Schoenherr, taking a 6-1 win.

Singles

The No. 1 singles match featured Campbell against Ramirez. Ramirez claimed the win for Grace in a quick 6-2, 6-1 victory. 

Kealy faced off against Salinas in the second singles match but lost 6-2, 6-2. 

Pischalko was defeated in the third singles match for the Belles, losing the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-2 against Ruegsegger.

Gardner regained momentum for the Belles in the fourth singles match as she dominated on the court, winning both sets 6-2 over Beltran.

Heading into the fifth singles match, Dudy lost to Schoenherr 6-4, 6-1.

In the final singles match of the day, Demblans-Dechans battled against Runestad, taking a close win as she sent the match into a tiebreaker. Demblans-Dechans won the first set 6-4 and lost the second set 6-3 before sealing the victory over Runestad in the tiebreaker, 10-2.

Belles tennis has wrapped up its final scheduled game for the fall season in their loss to the Lancers but are set to return to action in the spring.
