Saints soccer teams split weekend with a win and a loss

Saints’ men’s team secures 3-0 win, women’s team falls 4-0 to St. Ambrose

With both Holy Cross teams hosting St. Ambrose this past weekend, the men's soccer team took a big 3-0 conference win while the women's soccer team endured a 4-0 loss.

Women’s Match

In a tightly contested first half, both teams held firm defensively, ending scoreless.

However, St. Ambrose found their stride early in the second half, with Mia Vetter breaking the stalemate at the 49:39 mark. The Fighting Bees kept the momentum going when Taylor DeSplinter made the second goal, with an assist from Kaitlyn Brunson at the 52:32 time mark to make the score 2-0 over the Saints. Seven minutes later, St. Ambrose got their third and Brunson scored with an assist from Jenna Horst at the 59:47 time mark. Brunson made the final goal of the night for the Fighting Bees at the 86:38 time mark to finish the game 4-0 over the Saints. 

St. Ambrose dominated over the Saints on the field as they had more shots on goal (15-1) and more shots taken (20-2).

The Saints are set to play next on Oct. 16, traveling to East Chicago to face Calumet with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.

Men’s Match

The Saints men’s soccer team pulled through with a 3-0 win over St. Ambrose for a huge conference win.  

Senior Issac Filippo started the match off strong for the Saints as he scored the first goal at the 12:47 time mark with an assist from fellow senior Juan Perez. Perez quickly followed by putting up another goal for the Saints at the 25:40 time mark, with an assist from freshman Nathan Sanchez. 

Heading into the second half, the Saints did not slow down as Filippo scored his second goal of the match at the 57:02 time mark with an assist from senior Martin Von Thun.   

The Saints outperformed St. Ambrose, both in total shots (9-1) and shots on goal (4-1).

The men's team will also play against Calumet on Oct. 16. The men’s game will follow the women's game with their kickoff set for 8:30 p.m.
