The Holy Cross men’s basketball team is 1-1 through the beginning of the season, after an 84-58 win over East-West and a 66-80 loss to Lourdes.
East-West:
The Saints took their first win in their home-opener against the East-West Phantoms. The Saints entered halftime with a 38-23 lead after taking early control of the game. Sophomore guard Joey Garwood made his college debut, sinking two three-pointers and five free throws. Senior guard Phil Robles II contributed 14 points, while freshman forward Davide Brembilla anchored the defense with 11 rebounds — eight defensive and three offensive — and added eight points of his own.
The Saints kept control in the second half, with freshman guard Callaghan Weatherspoon excelling on defense. Senior guard Justin O’Neal added ten points, while junior guard AJ Roseman and Robles each contributed seven points to strengthen their lead.
Robles led the team on the court as he finished the night with 21 points, Roseman finished with 17 points and Garwood finished his debut game with 17 points.
Lourdes:
The Saints were not able to carry that momentum on the road against Lourdes.
Saints’ senior guard Nash Hostetler opened the scoring, and the teams traded points throughout a tightly contested first half before Lourdes began to pull away, entering halftime with an eight-point lead. Hostetler was a key contributor, putting up 14 points for the Saints.
The second half saw a similar back-and-forth battle, with the Saints mounting a comeback led by key shots from Hostetler, O’Neal and Robles early on. However, midway through the half, Lourdes pulled ahead once more with a 63-45 lead. They maintained their momentum, preventing the Saints from staging a late rally.
Hostetler led the team with 21 points and eight rebounds. O’Neal had 13 points and six rebounds.
The Saints, now 1-1, return home to host Kuyper College on Nov. 5 starting at 6 p.m.
