After a close loss at Indiana University Kokomo, the Holy Cross Saints women’s basketball team went on the road to face off against the Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines and took a big, 90-52 win.
Senior forward Grace Adams put up the first two points followed by freshman forward Allie Caldwell, who added two points to make the score 4-0. Michigan-Dearborn added its first points a few minutes later to close the score to 4-2. Senior guard Jordyn Smith added on a layup alongside sophomore guard Lilly Toppen, who added a three-pointer to make the score 9-2.
Two layups made by Adams and senior guard Kayliana Hammel, a second layup from Adams, five points from Smith and five points from junior guard Audrey Tallent made the score 25-2. Two points from Michigan-Dearborn did not affect the Saints as Hammel finished the quarter with a three-point shot to make the score 28-6.
Although trailing, Michigan-Dearborn started off the second quarter strong as it scored the first seven points of the quarter, making the score 28-13. Hammel, Tallent and Adams each put up two points of their own to pull the Saints ahead to 34-13. While the Wolverines managed four points, sophomore forward Brooke Lindesmith added her first point with a free throw, Toppen put up a layup and freshman guard La’Bria Austin put up her first three points to make the score 40-17. Six points from Michigan-Dearborn didn’t stop the Saints as Smith, Lindesmith and Austin each added two points of their own to finish the quarter up 47-27.
The Wolverines added the first seven points of the third quarter, but four free throws and a layup from Adams made the score 53-34. A layup from the Wolverines, a three-point shot from Austin and a layup from Lindesmith brought the score to 60-36. After a jump shot from the Wolverines, junior forward Elizabeth Edmonds made her appearance on the court with a jumper to make the score 62-38. With two free throws from Lindesmith and a layup from Adams, the end-of-quarter score was 66-38 Saints.
Separated by nearly 30 points, the two teams battled on defense. Smith broke the silence with a layup to make the score 68-39 after a jump shot from the Wolverines. Adams followed with two layups of her own and Caldwell added on one layup to make the score 74-41. Freshman forward Kaiden Hanley would later tally her first two points of the night to make the score 87-46. A final three-point shot from Tallent and two points from the Wolverines made the final score 90-52.
Adams and Tallent led on the court for the Saints, as they both hit double digits in terms of scoring. Adams rounded out the night with 19 points and Tallent finished with 15.
The Saints now prepare to host Goshen College on Nov. 13 starting at 6 p.m.
