Holy Cross sports winter break recap

The Saints’ men’s and women’s basketball teams played a total of nine games with mixed results

Over break, the Holy Cross College women’s basketball team and men’s basketball team competed in a total of nine games. The men’s basketball team competed in four games, while the women’s team competed in five.

Men’s basketball

The men’s basketball team competed in four games against Calumet, St. Francis, Olivet Nazarene and Judson. 

Calumet

The first game was against Calumet, where the Saints took the close, 58-57 loss. Senior guard Justin O’Neal finished with 27 points, and sophomore guard Joey Garwood finished with 12. Senior guard Phils Robles II proved to be key near the rim as he finished with four rebounds.

St. Francis

In their second game over break, the Saints faced St. Francis but took the 70-60 loss. Garwood was a top scorer for the Saints as he finished the night with 18 points alongside freshman forward Davide Brembilla who finished with 11. Sophomore forward Aris Duni played well on the interior as he finished with nine rebounds. 

Olivet Nazarene

In their third game against Olivet Nazarene the Saints took the 76-71 win. O’Neal led the Saints on offense with a total of 24 points alongside Garwood, who finished with 20 points. Duni continued to lead on the inside as he finished with five rebounds alongside junior guard AJ Roseman, who finished with six. 

Judson

The team rounded out its break with a big, 103-92 win over Judson. O’Neal led the team as he finished the night with a total of 31 points alongside Garwood who finished with 23 points. Duni was also important once again as he finished with an overall total of 11 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

The Holy Cross women’s basketball team competed in five games over the break against Calumet, Grace College, St. Francis, Olivet Nazarene and Judson.

Calumet

Holy Cross dominated in its first game against Calumet, winning 127-53. Freshman guard La’Bria Austin led the team on offense as she finished with 20 points alongside senior guard Kayliana Hammel and senior forward Grace Adams, who both finished with 19 points. 

Grace College

The second team the Saints faced was Grace College, and Holy Cross took the 66-61 win. Freshman forward Allie Caldwell led the team as she finished with a total of 21 points and nine rebounds. Adams also contributed 17 points and eight rebounds.  

Saint Francis

In their third game against St. Francis, the team’s only loss over break, Holy Cross took the 82-74 loss. Austin led the team with 18 points alongside Adams, who had a total of 17 points. Adams also led on the inside as she finished with a total of 12 rebounds.

Olivet-Nazarene

Bouncing back from its loss against St. Francis, Holy Cross played Olivet Nazarene and took the 101-88 win. Caldwell continued to lead as she finished with 22 points alongside Austin, who also finished with 22 points. On defense, Adams took charge as she finished with 15 rebounds.

Judson

In its final game over break, Holy Cross took the 85-51 win over Judson. Adams finished with a total of 28 points alongside Austin, who finished with 15 points. Sophomore forward Brooke Lindesmith led the team on the interior, as she finished with nine rebounds.
