Notre Dame’s Sugar Bowl matchup against Georgia has been postponed to Thursday following the deadly attack on New Orleans’ iconic Bourbon Street early Wednesday morning, Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley announced in a press conference.
“Work is fast about to set up a safe, efficient and fun environment for tomorrow night. There will be more details on that in the coming hours but for now that’s the plan,” Hundley said.
The game will now be played at 4 p.m. eastern time on Thursday, the Sugar Bowl announced in a tweet.
According to a press release from the FBI, an individual drove a pickup truck into a crowd at approximately 3:15 a.m., killing “at least 10 and injuring dozens of others.” Weapons and improvised explosive devices were found in the suspect’s vehicle, the report stated, and the FBI is investigating the incident as an act of terrorism.
University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead said in a Wednesday announcement on the social media platform X that a student at the university had been critically injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment.
“I have spoken to the student’s family and shared my concern, support and well wishes on behalf of the entire UGA community,” Morehead stated. “I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who moved so quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical personnel who are caring for the injured.”
In a Wednesday press release, University of Notre Dame President Fr. Robert Dowd extended prayers to “the family members and loved ones of all those impacted by the terrible attack in New Orleans early this morning.”
“We also pray for all those injured and extend our deepest gratitude to the brave first responders who risked their lives to protect others,” Dowd said in the press release. “To be in solidarity with those who suffer is to exemplify the spirit of Notre Dame. Today, we are in solidarity with all those impacted by this tragedy.”
