In its last game of the regular season, the Saint Mary’s Belles basketball team fell to Adrian, 82-71, on Saturday
Starting off the first quarter, junior guard Nicole Connolly put in 5 points before a shooting foul allowed Adrian put in 2, making the score 5-2. Sophomore guard Kate Restovich added 6 points to keep the Belles ahead 11-2 before Adrian added on 7, bringing the score to 11-8. Freshman guard Kate Passinault tallied 2 points and senior forward Julia Schutz added 2 more to keep the Belles ahead 15-8 before sophomore guard Annie Restovich added 3 points to end the first quarter with the Belles up 18-10.
Adrian started the second quarter with 5 points, but 2 from Schutz and 3 from Connolly widened the score to 23-15. Adrian added on 4 more points, but 4 in response from Schutz and 3 from senior guard Lauren Gumma made the score 30-19. After a 5-0 run from Adrian, Connolly added a jump shot and Passinault added 3 points, keeping the Belles ahead 35-24. Another 15 points from Adrian gave it the 38-35 lead, but a final layup from Schutz ended the first half with the Belles trailing 38-37.
Kate Restovich recorded 6 points to start the third quarter, bringing the Belles back ahead 43-38, but 6 in response from Adrian gave it the 44-43 lead. Schutz added on a layup, but Adrian responded with 8 points to stay ahead 52-45. Annie Restovich drained 3 points and junior guard Alyssa Matuza added 2 to make the score 52-50, but Adrian countered with 5 points to bring the score to 57-52. Adrian added another 5 points, but the Belles matched with 5, bringing the score to 60-57. Adrian ended the quarter with 4 points to take a 64-57 lead.
Neither team scored in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter, but Adrian found the basket first and added on 6 points before Connolly hit a free throw and Schutz added 2 points, bringing the score to 70-60. Adrian added 3 points, but a quick response came from Saint Mary’s as Connolly made a free throw, Gumma added 3 points and Schutz tallied 3, bringing the score to 73-67. Adrian pulled away again with 7 points before a free throw from Passinault and 3 points from Annie Restovich closed the score to 80-71. Adrian would score the last 2 points of the game and took the 82-71 win.
Schutz led the team with Belles with 21 points and Kate Restovich led with five rebounds for the day.
