The Saint Mary’s lacrosse team competed in its season opener against the Spalding Golden Eagles and took a big 20-2 win on Saturday.
Starting off the first quarter, Saint Mary’s was off to a quick start as sophomore attacker Rachel Speckhard put in the first two goals of the season. Sophomore attack Anneliese Kalman then tallied her first goal of the season and Speckhard followed, scoring three more times to keep the Belles ahead 6-0. With an assist from sophomore attacker Lana Skibins, junior midfielder Mary Grace Heekin added her first goal of the season and sophomore attack Kathryn Kalinowski ended the first quarter with another one, keeping the Belles ahead 8-0.
Skibins scored the first goal of the second quarter and quickly following, freshman midfielder Annabelle Spruill added two goals. Senior midfielder Paige Lyons put in another goal, but Spalding ended the quarter with its first tally of the day to make the score 12-1.
Saint Mary’s dominated in the third quarter as Kalinowski, Skibins, Lyons and Speckhard each put their name on the score sheet to keep the Belles ahead 16-1. Spalding closed out the quarter with a goal to narrow the score to 16-2.
In the final quarter, Heekin scored her second goal of the game and a few moments later, Skibins added on another to bring the score to 18-2. After the two teams went back and forth, sophomore defender Kelsey King recorded her first goal of the game, bringing the score to 19-2 before freshman attacker Mia Haines closed out the game by scoring and bringing the final score to 20-2.
Speckhard led the Belles as she finished with six goals, while Kalinowski led the team with three assists. The Belles’ upcoming game against Bethel has been canceled, so they now look to play Indiana Tech on March 6, starting at 5 p.m.
