Saint Mary's golf starts spring season with ninth-place finish

Belles golf placed ninth in 15-team field after only one round of play in the WashU Spring Invite.

The Belles golf team competed in the WashU Spring Invite this past weekend, their first competition of the spring season. In the fall, the team took home four wins from seven events.

Despite being cut short due to bad weather conditions, the Saint Mary’s golf team finished ninth in the 15-team field. The Belles carded a 317 (+33) in the invite.

Leading the Belles, from Richmond, Texas, was Melanie Maier, who finished in the top five after carding a two-over 73. The freshman finished her six holes with three birdies and logged a three-under 32 on the back nine. Following her was junior Julia Lizak from Riverview, Michigan. Lizak finished T22 for the Belles after carding a 77 (+6) with two birdies, one on the par-five sixth hole and the other on the par-three eighth.

Junior Amanda Melling from East Lansing, Michigan finished the day shooting an 83 (+12) that put her in the T52 spot. Katelyn Tokarz from Northville, Michigan rounded out the scorers for the Belles, finishing in the T61 spot. The senior carded an 84 (+13) in addition to adding on a birdie for herself on the par-four ninth hole. The final competitor for the Belles was sophomore Colleen Hand, who finished T88 after posting a 95 (+24).

As an individual, junior Breana Harrington from Florida finished in the T48 spot after carding an 82 (+11). Harrington added on two birdies for herself, one on the par-four ninth hole and another on the par-five 13th.

UW-Stout and Grinnell tied at the top of the competition after a day of play, and with the second day cancelled, both took home a share of first place.

The Belles will have the upcoming weekend off and then will compete in the Polar Beaver Invitational April 4-5 in Harrod, Ohio, and Lima, Ohio.
