Holy Cross tennis teams bring home two wins against St. Francis

Holy Cross sweeps the floor with two 4-0 wins

Both Holy Cross tennis teams were in action over the weekend as they faced off against St. Francis. Both teams swept the floor, taking the 4-0 win.

Men's matches
Doubles

Junior Naithaolin Golmei and sophomore Oscar Wai won the first leg of the clean sweep for the Saints with a quick 6-0 victory against Jedriel Bondoc and Lucas Fernandez-Pedrera. In the second doubles match, junior Matthew Jezky and senior Ciaran McCarthy were nearly as successful, prevailing 6-1 over Justin Joseph and Jack O’Donnell. In the final match, junior Thomas Friesen and sophomore Adam Singleton took the automatic win as St. Francis forfeited.

Singles

Friesen defeated Joseph without losing a point in what was the only regulation singles match to end without a forfeit or unfinished on points. Holy Cross accrued enough points from forfeits in matches with McCarthy and Golmei to guarantee a Saints win for the day, leaving matches with Jezky and Polis Koursaros unfinished.

Women's matches
Doubles

In their first doubles match, St. Francis took the 3-2 win over junior Leah Gonzales-Edwards and her partner Victoria Savvidou. Sophomore Nicole Martinez and freshman Sofia Rocha battled back for the Saints with a decisive 6-0 win. In the final match, St. Francis forfeited, giving sophomore Jamison Geofferys and sophomore Anna Vanderhyde an automatic 6-0 victory.

Singles

Sofia Rocha and Nicole Martinez both delivered 6-0 victories in courts four and five respectively. A forfeit on court six guaranteed an overall win, stopping play in all other courts. This was to the Saints' benefit as Jamison Geoffreys had lost her first round 6-2 against Gabriella Noa.

With the wins, both Holy Cross teams prepare to host their next matches. The women’s team will welcome Judson on Saturday, April 5, starting at 2 p.m., while the men’s team will prepare to host Marian at 10 a.m. on the same day.
