Adam Ramos, Erin McAuliffe, Jimmy Kemper, Adrian Mark Lore, Mike Donovan and Kelly McGarry discuss the albums we listened to during our impressionable teenage years. Whatever brought us to these albums — whether the quest for love or the need to be different — it’s clear that they shaped our experiences of music.

Jay Som — “The Bus Song” By Erin McAuliffe Jay Som, 22 year-old Melina Duterte, released “The Bus Song” in anticipation of her March 10 album release. Jay Som toured with Mitski and Japanese Breakfast last year, a lineup that must have inspired many emotions and much exultation. “The Bus Song” is rooted in place-

Potential presidential playlists

Erin McAuliffe, Adam Ramos, Adrian Mark Lore, Jimmy Kemper, John Darr, Kelly McGarry, Nora McGreevy and Jack Riedy | Tuesday, November 8, 2016

During his two terms as president, Barack Obama graced us with playlists straight from the White House. To get in #ElectionDay spirit, Scene predicted the playlists we think each 2016 candidate would release upon election — and added in their likely reasoning. Clinton: “Formation” – Beyonce: “Say you’ll Bey on Team #Hillary2016, too.” I’ve got hot

patten’s ‘Ψ’ is witchcraft as electronic music

Adrian Mark Lore | Tuesday, September 27, 2016

Whoever seeks to pigeonhole patten would have a hard time going about it. The London-based production duo made up of a man and a woman cryptically self-identifying as D and A, respectively, has been responsible for some of the most mysterious left-field electronic music of the decade so far. It is only appropriate, indeed, that

Preoccupations too concerned with indie cred

Adrian Mark Lore | Wednesday, September 21, 2016

Seldom does a band have the opportunity to release two self-titled records over the course of their career. For the Canadian post-punk outfit Preoccupations, a name change provided the opening. Formerly known as Viet Cong, the band decided to opt for a new moniker just last year — and only one year after first capturing

Gonjasufi explores a dark realm on ‘Callus’

Adrian Mark Lore | Tuesday, September 13, 2016

Sumach Ecks — better-known by his stage name Gonjasufi — is one of alternative hip-hop’s best-kept secrets. While he engaged with the music scene from a young age, Ecks’ breakthrough came when he was discovered by Warp Records following a guest appearance on Flying Lotus’ seminal 2008 record “Los Angeles.” Ecks was subsequently signed to the

‘Schmilco’ looks at the past through the present

Adrian Mark Lore | Friday, September 9, 2016

The suburbs of Des Moines, Iowa, bloom around the city like a springtime fractal. It’s 4 p.m. in 1996. You gulp down a sandwich, grab a half-empty backpack and run out through the door and into the summertime. Sparing the headgear, you hop on your bike, pedaling under a tart sun toward a best friend’s

Of Montreal’s “Innocence Reaches” Too High

Adrian Mark Lore | Thursday, September 1, 2016

Kevin Barnes is ambitious, let’s give him that. The front man of indie-rock outfit of Montreal is going on 43, and over the course of 14 studio albums — and as many extended plays and live records — he has scarcely ever allowed the band to settle into anything like habit or normalcy. The band’s first

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
