Alexandra Lowery | Thursday, February 9, 2017

“My condolences to anyone who has ever lost me / And, to anyone who got lost in me / Or, to anyone who ever felt they took a loss with me / … I’m sorry you missed the God in me.” The solo voice of poet Reyna Biddy commands the opening track on Kehlani’s debut

Worship Banks at ‘The Altar’

Alexandra Lowery | Monday, October 3, 2016

“Have you heard Banks’ new stuff?” “Yeah, it’s really good … just angry.” This was a conversation I had after Jillian Banks, better known to the alt-pop world and heartbroken women everywhere simply as BANKS, released a string of electric singles the summer prior to her sophomore effort, “The Altar.” Banks made a name for

Beyoncé’s ‘Lemonade’ an ode to the black woman

Alexandra Lowery | Monday, April 25, 2016

Beyoncé has once again single-handedly derailed that very meticulous study schedule you took the time to plan out for finals week with the release of the highly anticipated, and highly mysterious, project “Lemonade.” The 34-year-old artist did little to promote the premiere other than a vague Instagram post earlier in the week, which is more

No enjoyment like ‘Pride and Prejudice’

Alexandra Lowery | Thursday, April 14, 2016

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen will always be relevant. Two whole centuries after its initial publication in 1813, “Pride and Prejudice” endures as one of the greatest love stories ever written. In recent years, the classic novel can claim itself as the basis on which many love/hate rom-coms are built, the inspiration for a

Alexandra Lowery | Thursday, March 17, 2016

Whatever your opinions on Ariana Grande, it’s guaranteed you’ve had one the 22-year-old artist’s several Billboard-topping singles stuck in your head at some point since she showed us all the “The Way” in 2013. Her debut album, “Yours Truly,” garnered critical and commercial success for its sugar-sweet lyrics and Mariah Carey reminiscent vocals from the

Netflix released “The Characters” on March 11, an eight-episode series that allowed comedians 30 minutes of creative free reign on Netflix’s budget and platform. Netflix has sponsored stand-up specials before, but the sketch-based project sees the platform investing in comedy at an even more involved level. To garner some hype for our favorite comedians, Scene

‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’ Movie Review

Alexandra Lowery | Thursday, February 18, 2016

In case you were wondering, convincing your single friends to go see a movie titled “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” on Valentine’s Day takes a little more effort than you might expect. I was mostly met with a lot of blank stares, and my roommate even inquired if it was a movie that was currently playing

‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ Review

Alexandra Lowery | Thursday, February 11, 2016

The 2002 Tony-winning musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie” gained commercial success and popular praise throughout its 903-show run by giving Broadway audiences what they had been yearning for years: the glitz of the 1920s, show-stopping show tunes and tap. The Pasquerilla East Musical Company (PEMCo) tackles the Broadway giant this weekend in Washington Hall, proving that

Oscars so white

Alexandra Lowery | Monday, January 25, 2016

The 2016 Oscar nominees announced last Thursday incited not only the resurrection of trending hashtag #OscarsSoWhite on Twitter, but also an outcry among actors and creators to boycott the awards show after it was revealed that for the second year in a row all 20 nominees in the acting categories were white. Accusing Hollywood of its

‘Just Between Us’

Alexandra Lowery | Monday, November 2, 2015

If you and your best friend have never discussed the fact that the two of you are essentially a camera-ready comedic duo that would surely make it big as reality stars or vloggers, then your friendship is due for a re-evaluation. The rarity, however, is obviously the BFF pair with real comedic talent who braves

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
