Remembering the ‘Boot the Bell’ protests of 2004

Katie Hieatt and Annie Moran | Friday, December 6, 2019

Before the semester comes to a close, we have one more story that deserves to go down among the Notre Dame legends: that of the Notre Dame students whose campus activism amplified a farmworkers’ labor rights movement, becoming a part of one of the most successful social impact movements in recent memory.  We all know

Annie Moran and Katie Hieatt | Friday, November 15, 2019

This coming Monday commemorates the 50th anniversary of one of the most famous moments in the history of ND campus activism: the Notre Dame Ten. Remembering this point in our history offers the chance to consider where we’ve been and where the current moment finds us with respect to when and how we choose to

You are probably singing the wrong words to the fight song

Katie Hieatt and Annie Moran | Friday, November 1, 2019

I (Katie) was caught off guard when I sang the Victory March with the student body for the first time my freshman year. My parents, Notre Dame grads, were ecstatic football fans. I’ve known the song by heart since I was young. But when I sang the line, “While her loyal sons and daughters march

Notre Dame’s evasion of an inclusive non-discrimination clause

Annie Moran and Katie Hieatt | Friday, October 11, 2019

October is LGBTQ history month, and this year, the attention surrounding the oral arguments to the Supreme Court regarding Title VII protections have brought LGBTQ issues to the national consciousness. While the Supreme Court is deliberating on the legality of discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, we must

Notre Dame needs to step up on intercampus stereotyping

Katie Hieatt and Annie Moran | Friday, September 27, 2019

Among the attempts to characterize Notre Dame culture that line the shelves of the Hammes Bookstore, there exists a cheeky character called “Things Notre Dame Students Like,” its contents compiled from a blog of the same name. Being lovers of relatable and self-deprecating humor (read: Twitter. We like Twitter.), we were eager to discover aspects

Revisiting early coeducation at Notre Dame

Katie Hieatt and Annie Moran | Friday, September 13, 2019

“We knew we were groundbreaking. We knew there were a lot of people against us. We knew we would succeed.” Anne Pillai, class of 1977, remembers the day she came home from high school and her mother informed her Notre Dame was accepting women. Now working as the associate program director for education and outreach

Like many rising seniors, we’ve amassed a treasure trove of urban legends about Notre Dame’s past over the course of our time around campus. Throughout this semester, we’ll be using this column to explore the most intriguing leads that we’ve come across, from the infuriating, to the inspiring, to the just plain bizarre: Did Notre

Instagram post 2196678882233349836_1726022560 This year, the Make-A-Wish club made two teenage boys' Notre Dame Football dreams come true. From participating in the Bowling Green player walk to meeting Brian Kelly, these two boys recieved the full, all access pass to everything @ndfootball .
..
The Make-A-Wish club serves as the tri-campus community's point of contact to the Make-A-Wish foundation, a national nonprofit organization that gives grants to children from the ages of 2-and-a-half to 18 with life-threatening illnesses.

Instagram post 2195908705778065699_1726022560 “As you may know, I received 5,000 signatures and a protest on God Quad last spring, which — while compelling and interesting — was a bit of curiosity to me, because people were protesting against something that hadn’t been established yet,” said associate vice president of Residential Life Heather Rakoczy Russel in the Dahnke Ballroom last night. ..
Rakoczy Russel was looking to garner student feedback in crafting the off campus differentiation policies. Surveys will be sent out to the class of 2022, the first class impacted by the off campus differentiation, but ultimately the policy will reflect Notre Dame's attitudes about community and identity.

"After making my heart suffer such a toll, I decided to redeem myself — and my stomach — by delighting in some real — I cannot emphasize that word enough — Mexican food. I searched the Internet for the best places in South Bend, heavily rolling my eyes at the lists featuring Chipotle and, yes, Taco Bell. Thankfully, I found several options that promised authentic food, and most of them were located on South Bend’s west side."

Senior Carolina Robledo explains Las Posadas as "a commemoration of the walk of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem to find a place for Jesus to stay." The participants sang back and forth hymns with members of Duncan, Keough and O'Neill Halls as they travelled from dorm to dorm, commemorating Joseph and Mary's search for shelter.
