Welcoming Joe Biden with open arms

Clark Bowden | Thursday, April 29, 2021

Ask any student at Notre Dame who their favorite Catholic President of all time is, and most will reply “Josiah Bartlett.” Many students wear “Bartlett for America” t-shirts and during campaign seasons it is not uncommon to see posters across campus supporting the fictional TV President. But it is time to recognize that a new

Why liberal prospective students should come to Notre Dame

Clark Bowden | Thursday, April 15, 2021

It is not uncommon for me to get a wide range of feedback from students, faculty and alumni after each of my columns. Of course, I receive the most comments after some of my more controversial takes like the truly outlandish positions of thinking that women should have autonomy over their own bodies, LGTBQ+ people

How to talk to your friends who won’t get vaccinated

Clark Bowden | Thursday, April 1, 2021

I spent this past weekend feeling like a human garbage can. It was like my entire body was experiencing the Notre Dame-Alabama playoff game all over again while also getting clubbed in the head with a 9-iron. The only person who had a worse last few days than me is the captain of the boat

The power of community at Notre Dame

Clark Bowden | Thursday, March 18, 2021

After the University made the controversial decision to remove the Zahm community from campus, I have heard a lot regarding community, family and support. People in Zahm House, their alumni and many people within the greater Notre Dame community are outraged by the University’s actions. There have been petitions, on campus protests and Zahm residents

The hypocrisy of inclusion at Notre Dame

Clark Bowden | Thursday, March 4, 2021

One of my favorite things to do when returning to campus after a long break from school is to walk or drive directly up Notre Dame Avenue. Along this route you are greeted by Mother Mary standing atop the Golden Dome, arms open at her sides. Closer down God Quad, you are welcomed by the

Friendship across the political spectrum

Clark Bowden | Thursday, February 18, 2021

Amidst billowing winds, sub-zero temperatures and blankets of snow, it can be difficult to remind ourselves of the astonishing promise and opportunity that four years of college presents us. Under these harsh conditions of snowing 10(!) consecutive days with the added cloak of the coronavirus, I am increasingly seeing students with their heads down —

The power of Notre Dame’s Christian left

Clark Bowden | Friday, February 5, 2021

It’s not always easy to be a progressive student at Notre Dame. Some of our school’s rules, like the lack of available birth control and parietals, can be difficult to explain to those who haven’t gone to “Catholic Disneyland.” Trying to argue that Notre Dame is in fact a progressive space, deeply rooted in a

What can Trump give you that Amy Coney Barrett can’t?

Clark Bowden | Thursday, October 29, 2020

On Monday night, the United States Senate proved just how fast the legislative body in America can move when they have enough political motivation to do so, as it confirmed judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. One might catch themselves wondering where such expediency could be found when delivering a coronavirus relief package

I believe in the American voter

Clark Bowden | Thursday, October 15, 2020

Donald Trump may be one of the best things to happen to America. Now for those of you who have read my columns before (a number I’m fairly certain I could count on two hands), you know me to be a left wing bleeding heart liberal … and you’d be correct. So my opening sentence

The next greatest generation

Clark Bowden | Thursday, October 1, 2020

I have grown up in a trying time in American history. In just 21 years, I have lived through the terrorist attacks of 9/11, grown accustomed to near-constant war in the Middle East, become numb to watching the environment devastate our country through hurricanes, wildfires, floods, droughts and superstorms, seen the deficit spiral out of

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
