You already know what’s up — Scene Selections (Taylor’s Version) are below. “State of Grace (Taylor’s Version)” By Abby Patrick, Viewpoint Editor  First impressions are hard. I’ve made enough questionable ones to know. I don’t know what Taylor Swift put in “State of Grace,” but I think she had me at those drums. Or the

‘The Love Hypothesis’: TikTok made me read it

Christine Hilario | Monday, November 1, 2021

BookTok’s latest obsession is published “Reylo” fan fiction.  Popular fan fiction has been rebranded as original works of published fiction simply by changing the character names. Take “Fifty Shades of Grey” and “After,” for instance. Both book series started out as “Twilight” and One Direction fan fiction, respectively, and both series ended up garnering enough success

Surprisingly, Ben Platt’s make-up isn’t the worst thing about ‘Dear Evan Hansen’

Christine Hilario | Tuesday, September 14, 2021

After witnessing Ben Platt’s decrepit, foundation-caked face in the first “Dear Evan Hansen” trailer back in May, I immediately checked IMDB to figure out how old all the actors playing teenage characters were. It turned out that Platt isn’t much older than the rest of the cast. There’s just something about how obviously the film

‘The Mitchells vs. the Machines’: Family bonding, but with robots

Christine Hilario | Friday, May 7, 2021

It’s a tale as old as time: a quirky teenage girl’s dreams are stifled by a parent who just doesn’t get her. But this age-old story is thrown for a loop when the robot apocalypse begins. When an Apple-esque tech company accidentally instigates the machine apocalypse, the Mitchells are the only ones left to save

‘Shadow and Bone:’ YA at its most fun

Christine Hilario | Monday, May 3, 2021

Quick question: can you think of the last time a good adaptation of a Young Adult fantasy series was made?  Most YA fantasy and dystopia adaptations tend to dive head first into the pit of mediocrity and end up forgotten soon after they’ve been released. Does anyone remember “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones?” Or

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’: A perfect soldier versus a good man

Christine Hilario | Wednesday, April 7, 2021

In “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Steve Rogers is chosen to take the super-soldier serum because he is “Not a perfect soldier, but a good man.”  The role of Captain America is defined by a desire to do good above all else. This is why Sam Wilson is perfect to take up the mantle after

‘Invincible’ and not-so-supermen

Christine Hilario | Tuesday, March 30, 2021

It’s every rebellious teen’s worst nightmare to turn into their parents, but for Mark Grayson, the protagonist of “Invincible”, his number one fear is being nothing like his dad. Mark is the son of Omni-Man, the world’s most powerful superhero, and a regular human woman. All his life, Mark has wanted to follow in his

Christine Hilario | Monday, March 1, 2021

February 25, 1964. Four legends walk into a motel room. The rest is lost to history.  Based on a true meeting, “One Night in Miami” is a speculative account of what happened the night when Cassius Clay celebrated becoming the heavyweight boxing champion of the world with his three friends: Malcolm X, Jim Brown and

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
