Mike Donovan, Gina Twardosz, Caroline Lezny, Hanna Kennedy and Charlie Kenney | Wednesday, April 29, 2020

With four years gone, now our senior Scene writers share their collegiate swan song. These songs make up the soundtrack to a collection of memories — some vivid, some faded — and they capture the essence of what Scene is often about: the people and the music.   “Aphasia” – Pinegrove By Senior Scene

‘Love is Blind’ won’t see success through its terrifically boring shallowness

Caroline Lezny | Wednesday, February 26, 2020

It’s the fairytale proposal that romantics grow up dreaming about: these couples get engaged without ever seeing each other’s faces. Netflix’s new reality series “Love Is Blind” presents 10 men and women with the challenge of meeting their soulmates. The catch? They have to make their decisions based solely upon “blind” conversation. The first episodes

‘Bandstand’ hits all the right notes at the Morris Center

Caroline Lezny | Tuesday, January 28, 2020

Jazz and nightclubs, swing dancing and radio contests: these are probably not the hallmarks of World War II narratives — and with good reason. The recent Broadway musical “Bandstand,” however, embraces the unexpected in its synthesis of music, dance and devastatingly candid storytelling. This past weekend, South Bend’s Morris Performing Arts Center presented the Broadway

Caroline Lezny | Tuesday, December 3, 2019

Comedian Daniel Sloss strides onto stage in Sydney, Australia, to begin his new comedy special and invites the audience to “get comfortable … and if you’re not comfortable don’t worry about it too much — I’m about to provide plenty of material that’s going to make most of you very f—–g uncomfortable.” The foul-mouthed, brutally

Actors are the light in Not-So-Royal Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’

Caroline Lezny | Friday, November 15, 2019

The cast of “Romeo and Juliet” circles up pre-show as Advisor Scott Jackson gives them a piece of advice. As he looks around the circle of nervous faces, Jackson reassures: “If you’re comfortable, if you don’t have nerves, you’re doing something wrong. [Acting] is not a comfortable profession.” The actors nod, and their anxiety seems

‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ may be the closest we get to time travel

Caroline Lezny | Thursday, October 10, 2019

New Zealand film director and producer Peter Jackson is best known for his work on the fantastical “Lord of the Rings” trilogy and its three prequel films concerning “The Hobbit,” but his most recent project is anything but otherworldly. It has been theorized by literary scholars that the fantasy of Middle-earth present in Jackson’s early

Snite Museum, WVFI duet for ‘Art on the Aux’

Caroline Lezny | Monday, September 30, 2019

Art is undoubtedly one of the cultural cornerstones of society. From the realism of Ancient Greek sculpture to the abstract genius of Jackson Pollock, art has been used throughout history to express and shared emotion. However, there are some today who feel art is lofty, incomprehensible and, ultimately, out of their reach. An upcoming collaboration

Charlie Kenney, Mike Donovan, Caroline Lezny and Ryan Israel | Tuesday, September 24, 2019

Pumpkin spice lattes, influenza, decorative gourds, Michael Myers making your neighborhood’s babysitter market less competitive — ah, yes, autumn. We recall it well. The temperature may hesitant to dip below 80 degrees, but we are eager to receive the fruits of the coming season. “Indian Summer” — Beat Happening  By Mike Donovan, Scene Editor A

‘Fleabag’ scratches an itch for comedy-seeking audiences

Caroline Lezny | Wednesday, September 18, 2019

“I sometimes worry I’d be less of a feminist if I had bigger tits,” Fleabag says in the midst of a silent Quaker meeting. This scene provides the opening of the fourth episode of the show’s most recent season. As shocking as her comment is, Fleabag’s inappropriate outburst is perfectly characteristic of the lascivious humor

A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
