Faded-out portrait of air conditioner unit on beige wall. “Fml” superimposed over ceiling fan. Closeup of “Utz ‘The Crab Chip’” label. Blurred red maple leaf screaming “I’m not sure anyone I know uses this app.” These are not samples of contemporary poetry or revolutionary MoMA pieces. They are a few of the images I found this afternoon

Fall Shows Preview

Caelin Miltko, Allie Tollaksen, Maddie Daly, Matt McMahon and Daniel Barabasi | Tuesday, September 30, 2014

Even though Scene keeps loading you up with the “Weekly Watch” and polishing new gems like “Gotham,” don’t forget to catch up with currently running favorites. Here are a few selects by Scene staff for shows returning in the fall, although we can’t take any responsibility for side-effects of binge-watching. “Bob’s Burgers” By Allie Tollaksen After watching

Apple appeals to status over innovation

Daniel Barabasi | Wednesday, September 17, 2014

In 2001, a balding man sporting a black turtleneck sweater entered a small, dim room and stepped onstage — ready to change the technology dynamic forever. Gazing out into his audience, he declared the new direction of his company: offering “1,000 songs in your pocket.” To emphasize his goal, he pulled a small white

My New Sweats

Daniel Barabasi | Tuesday, September 9, 2014

This past Sunday a whirlwind of students took the JACC by force in a post-shutout euphoria. The occasion? A celebration of the new Under Armour deal by selling the old, outdated-at-conception sports clothing and equipment. Yet, upon arrival barely an hour into the event, the festivities seemed more like the melancholy one experiences when walking

Stadium song suggestions

Allie Tollaksen, Matt McMahon, John Darr, Miko Malabute, Erin McAuliffe, Maddie Daly and Daniel Barabasi | Monday, September 8, 2014

With two victories at home under its belt, the Notre Dame football team certainly doesn’t need any help from us this season. Still, the Scene Staff is here with some advice to make future home victories even sweeter: song suggestions for students, fans and athletes alike to jam out to during games. While nothing could

Festival Frills

Daniel Barabasi | Monday, April 28, 2014

Welcome to the brand-new experience. Air-conditioned bathrooms. Rehydration zones. Fenced-off relaxation areas with better views. Reservation-only four-course dinners. Beauty parlors sponsored by Sephora. All available at your friendly neighborhood music festival. Personally, the list above sounds like a friend describing their latest family vacation to a Cancun resort, not the VIP experience at Coachella, Ultra

Pharrell’s Phashion

Daniel Barabasi | Thursday, April 3, 2014

You might know him for his hit collaborations, but soon Pharrell Williams will have the world staying up all night for another reason: fashion, or more notably, his upcoming Adidas collection. With the recent onslaught of normcore, Pharrell’s acceptance into the heavy hitters of the fashion community offers a necessary relief. His personal style is,

Mess with the Wu

Daniel Barabasi | Wednesday, April 2, 2014

“MZA, who was that? Ayo, the Wu is back” As announced last week, the Wu Tang Clan has indeed made its return, with their 20th anniversary album, “The Wu — Once Upon A Time In Shaolin.” The album is a self-declared “piece of contemporary art” and the “first ever private music album,” according to the

Paris vs. Budapest: Budapest

Daniel Barabasi | Wednesday, March 19, 2014

In the cold winter of 2013, “Business Insider” named Budapest, a place you probably haven’t heard of, the hipster capital of Europe. Following the “Book of Hip,” such an act would immediately discredit any underground-ness the capital of Hungary would hold. Instead, the irony of “Business Insider” having any claim to make such a statement

A plea to the fashion industry

Daniel Barabasi | Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Think back for a moment to the last time you tuned in to a fashion show, picked up “GQ” or “Elle” or strolled in New York City. Ignoring the few runway models with a cage or other uncomfortable object on their body, the clothing often looks pretty dapper. Unfortunately, there’s a strong bias in the

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
