Ranking the ways Notre Dame has helped me battle depression

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, April 24, 2019

Yikes, that’s a tad more serious of a column title than I usually write. I promise, I’m still going to throw in some jokes to keep this last column on brand. I wanted to talk about the ways Notre Dame has helped me battle — and often overcome — this struggle with mental health because:

The final dorm rankings

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, April 17, 2019

I sat in the back of a car with three of my best friends in the third hour of a six-hour trip in the summer of 2017. To pass the time, we decided to sit down and rank the dorms of Notre Dame. One letter to the editor later and our creation entered the mainstream.

Ranking my own columns

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, April 3, 2019

We are closing in on the last few columns, with only two left after this. As my column nears its end, I want to reflect on my columns and evaluate them by the only way I see fit — ranking them. What better way to categorize my thoughts? Here is the list of the 25

Ranking the campus outrages

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, March 20, 2019

As my time as a columnist (and a student) draws to a close, I have started to reflect on my time at Notre Dame. Of course, there are the interhall sports moments, the passions of the Grotto and the charm of dances. These are great and integral to my Notre Dame experience, but my favorite

Which Disney Princess I would be most likely to marry

Davis Gonsalves | Tuesday, March 5, 2019

No this is not your standard BuzzFeed quiz. I have not researched the Disney movies these princesses come from, nor have I tried to cater to popular opinion on this one. My thoughts come from my 6-12-year-old impressions. Is there a better way to judge your life partner than on those formative years? The answer

Mid-semester ranks

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, February 27, 2019

The countdown begins. After this column, I only have four more to write before I graduate. Fortunately, I have planned the last four in sequence. That means this will be the last chance to rank the things I either never had a chance to rank, or that would simply not be worthy of an entire

Who wants to go to Dome Dance?

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, February 13, 2019

When Dunne Hall was announced as Men’s Hall of the Year last year, I had about a minute to celebrate before my friends from around campus talked to me about taking them to the prestigious Dome Dance. How do you decide who to take though? I’m far past my freshman year where the idea was

Ranking the relationships at Notre Dame

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, January 30, 2019

Notre Dame is unique in many ways. Our relationships with varying groups on campus set us apart from other schools. However, the relationships within the school are hardly unique among students, and I am attempting to rank these to bring them out to fruition. 11. If a dorm was a city

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, January 16, 2019

In a way, each of our unique communities are like small urban areas including compact living, support systems and living conditions deemed dubious by first-world inhabitants. I tried to determine how each dorm represents a city as grouped by area of the campus. Although the dorms are close, the cities are nowhere near.   South

Ranking the Notre Dame websites

Davis Gonsalves | Wednesday, November 28, 2018

I’ve been in a bad habit of not crediting my columns to the people who give me inspiration, so let me start with a story to credit senior Joe Weiler, who ultimately gave me the idea to write this piece. As we sit in our lab together, I am trying to check my team’s score

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
