The consent of the governed

David Henry | Thursday, December 2, 2021

“… Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,” Thomas Jefferson claimed in the Declaration of Independence. Why don’t we like philosophy?

David Henry | Thursday, November 18, 2021

The University of Notre Dame, with its requirements for students to study philosophy and theology, is the exception rather than the rule for top universities. And yet, it is not uncommon to hear philosophy and theology derided as subjects unworthy of study: The argument is often that they are not useful and therefore are a

Unlearning school

David Henry | Thursday, November 4, 2021

When I returned home for fall break, I found campaign material for my local school board election sitting on my counter. I decided to research the candidates and found that the main dividing line between the incumbents and the challengers were masks and “critical race theory.” The incumbents supported requiring masks in school and supported

9/11 and the media

David Henry | Thursday, September 23, 2021

David Henry | Thursday, August 26, 2021

As we return to Notre Dame this fall, or perhaps arrive there for the first time, we return to a campus ready to make up for lost time. And yet, while we’re focused on all the football and tailgating, it can be easy to lose sight of the reason we go to a university like

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
