Finding identity regardless of stereotypes

Diversity Council | Thursday, December 12, 2019

The concept of race has always been a part of my life whether I knew it or not. When I was little, I noticed the obvious differences between me and others, such as my dark, almond-shaped eyes and straight black hair. I noticed that the sharp, inflected sounds of the Vietnamese language weren’t heard in

Where is compassion?

Diversity Council | Thursday, November 21, 2019

Something I have mulled over for a significant part of the past year, and I have been presented with many times over the course of my past (almost) three-and-a-half years here, is the issue of lack of compassion. Compassion, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, is “sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to

The diversity of myself

Diversity Council | Thursday, November 7, 2019

When looking at diversity on campus, it is common to look at this issue — and yes, diversity on campus is an issue — as a collective. It is common to broadly analyze and compare the differences between ethnicity, race, and culture between various groups at Notre Dame. It is uncommon, however, to have this

We are all Notre Dame

Diversity Council | Thursday, October 17, 2019

Dear Notre Dame, The dialogue on this campus has very real implications for the lives of students, especially when it begins to touch on an individual’s or group’s identity. Over the course of the last few weeks, we have seen things published and heard things said that specifically target the LGBTQ members of our Notre

What the Sacred Heart of Jesus statue should mean to us

Diversity Council | Thursday, October 3, 2019

The Sacred Heart of Jesus statue is one of the most iconic, symbolic but also controversial pieces of public art on Notre Dame’s campus. The Sacred Heart of Jesus sits right in front of the Main Building on God Quad, and if one looks at the statue directly, one can see the Basilica of the

It’s OK to not be OK

Diversity Council | Thursday, September 19, 2019

What would you do if your best friend told you they were having a bad day? Would you tell them to “cheer up?” Would you start talking about how bad your day was too, in an attempt to show them how much you “understand?” We’re always trying to make ourselves and others “cheer up” and

Recalling the inclusive campus survey

Diversity Council | Thursday, September 5, 2019

Notre Dame faces the issue of forgetfulness. We forget about the outrage over some new administrative action we read about a few weeks ago. We forget about ‘let’s get a meal sometime’ from three weeks ago. We forget about the impactful seminar we attended last week.  We forgot about the results of the Inclusive Campus

NASAND resolutions

Diversity Council | Thursday, March 7, 2019

On Monday night, the Notre Dame Student Senate passed two resolutions that will help to greatly improve the Native American experience at Notre Dame. First, a resolution for a land acknowledgment of the Native nations, including the Pokagon Potawatomi, that came before the founding of Notre Dame. The recommended acknowledgement being: We acknowledge our presence

Uniting through dance: Project Fresh and diversity

Diversity Council | Thursday, February 21, 2019

When I came to Notre Dame, one of my passions I knew I couldn’t live without was dance. My freshman year, I decided to join Project Fresh and I found more than just a dance group — I found a family. Project Fresh (PFresh) is a hip-hop dance group founded in 2006 by Eddie Song. Our members

Diversifying diversity

Diversity Council | Thursday, February 7, 2019

As I got ready to leave for my first football game as a student at Notre Dame, I went through my checklist of gameday essentials. I had the normal array of items that any undergraduate would have: a student ID, baseball hat and phone; in addition to these typical items, I also had atypical items,

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
