Murder, mayhem and moral dilemmas

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, September 28, 2021

“We don’t think that murder is funny, we don’t think that people being killed is funny — we just think that we’re funny.” The very first podcast I ever listened to regularly was “My Favorite Murder,” a comedy podcast that falls into the popular and highly lucrative family of true crime podcasts. It is one

America has a sick problem

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, September 14, 2021

Nearly a year ago today, a CNN article proclaimed that “things are most likely never going ‘back to normal.’” At the time, that wasn’t really a controversial statement — it was the prevailing sentiment among people who spent too much time reading the news. The COVID-19 pandemic had shaken the foundations of our “normal,” and

The story of us (Notre Dame and me)

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, August 31, 2021

I have moved five times during my four years at Notre Dame, and every time I am shocked by the sheer amount of stuff I have. Sure, I wouldn’t ever say I’m a minimalist, but somehow I always find myself packing my car to the absolute brim with posters, storage bins, clothes, command strips and

How my dad’s favorite albums helped me survive junior year

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, May 4, 2021

I’ve never been a huge fan of New Year’s resolutions. Even aside from the gross ways diet companies exploit people’s insecurities around the first day of every year, New Year’s resolutions seem doomed to fail. In the two decades of New Year’s Days I’ve experienced, I’ve tried my hand at a few resolutions (meditate more,

Trading hand sanitizer for haircuts

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, April 20, 2021

If you’re a friend of mine, a family member, or honestly anyone who’s interacted with me in the last few weeks, I’ve probably asked you the same unanswerable question: Should I cut my hair? It’s always the same conversation. I feel like I need a change, but I like being able to braid and style

There’s something missing from our abortion debates

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, April 6, 2021

This semester, my Thursday nights are usually entirely forgettable — I have class until 5:10 p.m., so when I get home my brain is completely fried. My roommates are usually at work, so I boil some pasta, change into sweats and watch a few episodes of whatever show I happen to be binging. A few

QAnon and you(anon)

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, March 23, 2021

Alright, I’ll admit it. In the heat of the lockdown summer, around June of last year, I found myself down a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories. I was consuming heaps of media centered around conspiracies, from binging “The X-Files” to spending sweltering afternoons watching “documentaries” on The History Channel with my dad. I found learning

A true Catholic education

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, March 9, 2021

Growing up, I spent most of my time learning about the world in two rooms: my church sanctuary, and my living room, with the TV tuned to MSNBC. Religion and politics have always been a part of my life, but they were always completely unrelated. I’d hear my minister mention something about racial justice, or

A tortoise, a hare and Democrats’ happy ending

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, February 23, 2021

We all know the one about the tortoise and the hare, right? I assume I don’t need to spend time recounting the tale, the fable employed to teach every third grader in the country about the importance of hard work and perseverance. From a young age, we’re taught that “slow and steady wins the race,”

Taylor Swift and the power of teenage tears

Ellie Konfrst | Tuesday, February 9, 2021

If you know nothing else about me, you may know that I am a pretty big Taylor Swift fan. After I first heard “Red” when I was 13, I quickly devoured the rest of her discography and began anxiously anticipating her next releases. In a sense, I grew up with her, letting her stories of heartbreak

This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bou This Thursday, Feb. 16, the 93rd annual Bengal Bouts will begin its preliminary rounds. A men’s boxing tournament that benefits the Holy Cross Mission in Bangladesh, Bengal Bouts seems to perfectly combine two integral aspects of Notre Dame’s identity: a passion for sports and a commitment to social impact.

This week, From the Archives takes a long overdue look at the history of Bengal Bouts. While this tournament predates the Observer by nearly four decades, we uncovered a selection of stories that capture at least a part of the rich history of this Notre Dame tradition.

We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department We asked you to Ask The Observer Sports Department and you responded with the request: “Northwestern @ Notre Dame 2014 Football Breakdown”. That game was a heartbreaking loss for a Notre Dame team that had started 6-0 before stumbling down the stretch to a 7-5 record. A bowl game win over LSU salvaged some optimism for the program’s future, but that loss to Northwestern was a shocking result that contributed to one of the more appalling stretches of Irish football in the Brian Kelly era.
